Fewer than one in ten households in the UK are covered by insurance to pay for private hospital treatment. Two-thirds have this cover as a perk of the job of the family's breadwinner. This means that only about 3% of households actively take the decision to buy private medical insurance (PMI).
The low priority most of us give to private treatment is perhaps a tribute to the National Health Service. However, increasing demands on the NHS may encourage more of us to consider the private alternative, and the providers of medical insurance are ever coming up with new variations to address the problems of providing the cover consumers want, at a price they can afford to pay.
