Death risk: Why you should avoid hospitals on weekends
03 Feb 2012
There are a number of ways you can cut the cost of your international health insurance premium.
Check your level of cover
Only buy cover you need. Before you sign on the dotted line, check what cover is included as standard and what costs extra to insure.
If you feel your insurance premium is too high, remove any additional protection from your policy that you feel you can do without.
Buy limited cover
Some providers offer low cost policies that only cover major illnesses. These ‘limited cover’ plans tend to be cheaper but it's worth remembering that most medical care is needed for minor injuries and illnesses.
Increase your excess
Choosing to pay a higher excess on any claims will lower your insurance premium. However, think carefully before doing this. The excess will often apply to different sections of your claim – for instance, hospital treatment and consultant's fees. You don't want to set the excess so high that the amount of excess becomes unaffordable.
Compare quotes
Compare the price of each policy with the level of cover provided to see which offers the best value.
