The Mail on Sunday yesterday carried an article about a patient who says that private medical insurance saved his life.
Johnny Mann, a 56-year-old health insurance salesman, was diagnosed with lung cancer last April. Despite being told he had six months to live by NHS doctors, his private health insurance has allowed him access to specialist treatment and a wide range of drugs.
Johnny, of Lincoln, said: "I can't say for sure that having private medical cover has made the difference in terms of my progress compared with being treated on the NHS. But it has taken stress and anxiety out of the situation. I've had a nurse administering chemotherapy at home, which is not always available on the NHS, and I have been able to call my consultant any time, day or night. And I am fairly sure some of the drugs I've had access to are either not available or only available in lower doses on the NHS."
Of the 40,000 people diagnosed with lung cancer in the UK, only one in five are alive within a year, according to Cancer Research UK. Private medical insurance policies are not cheap, but they can assure the best possible treatment. Health insurance premiums will be based on age, sex, health, whether you smoke and where you live.
