Pay more for health insurance if you smoke, American people say

Thu, 16 Nov 2006

A recent study conducted by researchers in America indicates that people think smokers should pay more for their health insurance .

The study, which was published in the journal Health Affairs, also investigated American perceptions of health coverage. They found that the majority of Americans support the expansion of health coverage, or even the government providing coverage to all citizens.

The researchers also investigated how people felt about health insurance for smokers and the obese . The researchers aimed to find out whether American people were really interested in the basic principle of insurance, which is to share risk across the whole populations.

Participants in the study had no clear idea of how to finance improvements in health care, and yet 52 per cent believed health insurance should be mandatory. There are almost 50 million uninsured people in the US.
