Chronic medical conditions can make travelling a major issue, particularly when it comes to insurance problems. Most major travel health insurance companies will not be in a position to cover chronic illnesses, and those that do may well exclude travel to some countries or inflate premiums .
When your travel insurance costs more than your holiday, it is time to start thinking about changing insurers or looking for a different destination. Ongoing health problems, or a serious health issue, could cause insurance problems, but some careful shopping around may reveal an insurer who will sell you reasonable cover. It is worth doing this before you purchase your health insurance cover .
Despite the new EHIC card (European Health Insurance) UK travellers should not embark without additional health insurance cover. The Chairwoman of the Long-term Medical Conditions Alliance, Scotland, Audrey Birt, says: "Travel insurance is a big issue for people with long-term medical conditions. Either it puts them off travelling, or they take risks and go without cover. However, no one should be hampered by their conditions and there should be opportunities for them to do the same things as everyone else."
