Private health insurance could get tax relief thanks to ABI

Tue, 24 Oct 2006

The ABI (Association of British Insurers ) is putting pressure on the government when it comes to tax on private health insurance .

The association are calling for the removal of the tax disincentives that currently impede employers trying to offer private health insurance to their employees. New research indicates that private medical insurance is key to keeping employees healthy and at work. Greenstreet Berman commissioned the first piece of research.

The ABI also highlighted research by Norwich Union healthcare . According to them, employers, employees and even the government benefit from occupational healthcare schemes.

The director general of the ABI, Stephen Haddrill, said: "These influential reports conclude that by removing tax disincentives, occupational health in the workplace could flourish. That would be good for individuals, employers and the government. If we stop taxing occupational health as a 'benefit in kind,' and remove the current National Insurance liability that occupational health attracts, we could greatly enhance this important service."
