Free prescriptions for the Welsh

According to recent health insurance news, over three million people who are currently registered with GPs in Wales will not have to pay for prescriptions as of today. The news will bring a smile to the faces of those Welsh people who do not have private medical insurance . However, in other parts of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, prescription charges are now more expensive.

The first minister for Wales, Rhodri Morgan, reportedly commented that he was pleased by the removal of prescriptions fees. Assembly members have voted to reduce prescriptions charges to nothing in a pledge began in 2001.

Mr. Morgan reportedly commented: "Devolution enables Wales to come up with Welsh solutions to Welsh circumstances. Wales, due to its industrial past, has a legacy of ill-health, especially of chronic conditions."

The DOH (Department of Health) was quick to confirm that scrapping prescription charges would not take place in the UK.
