Heart disease to cripple health service

Tue, 20 Feb 2007

According to a new study, heart disease is set to cripple the National Health Service, news that could have many people reaching for a health insurance application form.

The gloomy forecast comes from the charity Heart UK, who claimed that the NHS is ‘sleepwalking’ into a funding crisis over heart disease. They predict that the welfare state and pension system could become unaffordable due to this catastrophe. For those people who have already opted for private medical insurance, the news may not be a concern.

However, UK coronary heart disease patients are expected to double in the next 25 years. The report indicates that the Government could be facing both an economic and healthcare timebomb by failing to deal with high cholesterol levels.

Professor Andrew Neil, the chairman of Heart UK, reportedly commented: "The number of people developing and living with heart disease is spiraling, and the result is our government is sleepwalking into a potential health and pensions crisis. Tackling cholesterol is key to the nation's heart health. The government must stop dragging its heels or we will all live to regret it."
