The health insurance company PruHealth, who sell private medical insurance to the UK market, will now offer customers upgraded gym memberships as a reward for being healthy. Pru are based around the fundamental principle of providing rewards for customers who improve their health.
In theory, therefore, the more one attends a gym, the less the membership costs. For those people who use the gym over twice a week, the cost could even slide to nothing. Pruhealth aim to make private health insurance desirable and affordable for a whole cross-section of their market, by encouraging customers to be healthier and fitter.
The chief executive of PruHealth, Shaun Mattison, reportedly commented: "We are always thinking of new ways to encourage people to live healthy lives and look after their wellbeing, and exercising regularly is one way to do this. The more you exercise, the happier and healthier your life could be. And for us, the insurers, having a fitter pool of policyholders means that they are less likely to make claims, which in turn should help us to keep premiums down for everyone. We know that going to the gym can be difficult for some people due to the expense or time constraints or even lack of motivation. We want to give people a greater incentive to go and this is it: keep exercising and bring down the cost of your insurance ."
