Diabetes and health insurance

Mon, 05 Mar 2007

Over 2 million people in the United Kingdom suffer from diabetes, a chronic disease that is exempt from most health insurance and private medical insurance policies . Although life insurance and travel insurance are becoming more widely available for diabetics, medical insurance remains almost impossible to get without paying a grossly inflated premium.

Diabetes is an enormous and growing problem in the UK, and indeed throughout the world, yet health insurance seems to barely recognize the diabetic population. It is unfortunately the case that diabetics pose a much greater risk to health insurers than non-diabetics. Uneven blood sugar levels over a period of time can cause a variety of different complications, some of which can cause great healthcare expense.

With the global rate of diabetes forecast to soar by 39 per cent between 2000 and 2039 (according to the World Health Organisation), it could be time for policymakers and insurance companies to wise up to the potential market place amongst diabetics, and start providing the cover needed.
