Health insurance could become more necessary

Tue, 06 Nov 2007

Taking out a health insurance or private medical insurance policy could be the only way for many people to afford new drugs.

Research by think tank the King’s Fund and City University indicate that recent NICE (National Institute for Health Clinical Excellence) suggestions could be false, and beyond the affordability of the National Health Service.

NICE said that the NHS could afford £30,000 per annum for a drug that provided an extra year of quality life. However, the study says that the NHS could only afford around £12,000 for heart disease treatment.

A professor from City University, Nancy Devlin, reportedly commented: "Even if £20,000 to £30,000 was the right threshold when Nice was set up, in the current NHS, where there is far less money to spend, it doesn't appear to be now."
