Health Service issues increase dental insurance popularity

Mon, 15 Oct 2007

According a a new investigation into the state of UK dentistry, up to 20 per cent of British people are seeking private dental care. The stats were attributed to growing unease about the dental aspects of the National Health Service.

The study was conducted by the Commission for Patient and Public Involvement in Health (CPPIH), and surveyed over 5,000 patients. A fifth of those surveyed had visited a private dentist, with many missing treatment because of cost. Some 50 per cent of private patients deserted the NHS when their dentist stopped treating NHS patients.

Alarmingly, almost 30 per cent of patients seek private care because they cannot find an NHS dentist. Amongst those who do receive NHS care, a high level of satisfaction was reported.

The study also polled a number of dentists, who said recent changes to dental care processes make the quality of care worse and booking an appointment more difficult.
