Health service continues to swallow resources

Fri, 12 Oct 2007

A recent Times article discussed the vast resources needed to keep the National Health Service up and running. Over the past five years, the article indicated, the health service has eaten through a significant proportion of public spending in recent years.

The National Health Service has seen an annual rise of 4 per cent to meet its budget, with an increase from £90 billion to £110 billion. The article also raises important points about the scale of the NHS. For instance, the health service is the largest employer in the developed world, with 1.4 million staff.

Despite this, the UK does not have especially high health outcomes, especially when compared to other European countries with less health employees and larger populations. Campaigners are imploring the government to split the NHS and make a proportion of medical care payable through private medical insurance or simply private payment. The article concludes that a monstrous health service funded by tax and free for the population is not sustainable.
