According to a recent survey commissioned by the medical tourism company Treatment Abroad, over 50,000 British people travelled across international borders for lower cost dentistry and cosmetic surgery . The theory goes that the savings made on UK healthcare are enough to pay for a two-week holiday.
The study reveals that consumers travelling abroad for healthcare could save up to 80 per cent on what it would cost to have the work done in the UK. For instance, a cosmetic surgery procedure known as a tummy tuck would cost almost £4,500 in the UK, but under £2,500 in Belgium .
For those who have health insurance and private medical insurance, this type of procedure is rarely covered. A representative of TA, Keith Pollard, reportedly commented: "Many clinics and medical tourism companies are now offering an all-inclusive package embracing all procedure, travel and accommodation costs that may offer additional savings. Patients who have become 'medical tourists' have been extremely positive about their experience and the quality of care they have received."
