Profit share for GPs in health clinics

Wed, 09 Apr 2008

Sir Richard Branson is planning to unveil a chain of Virgin health centres throughout the UK. The health clinics will be staffed by private dentists, therapists and laser-eye surgeons, all of whom will be given a percentage share of the profits .

A primary Virgin polyclinic will be opened in Swindon this summer, and Branson intends to create 20 clinics throughout the country over the next five years. Of particular interest to health insurance news, NHS doctors would in theory work in the clinics, be paid by the state and yet share in profits .

The clinics will effectively be one-stop shops that provide a variety of treatments, including eye care, dentistry, nutrition advice, pharmacy and acupuncture . However, Virgin Healthcare claim that there will be no conflict of interest.

Chief executive of Virgin Healthcare, Mark Adams, reportedly commented: "We are saying to doctors they are not allowed to refer. But clearly if you have 20,000 patients visiting who see what else is there, that doesn't harm us."

How the clinics will relate to health insurance and private medical insurance policies remains to be seen.
