According to esure.com one in four Britons are taking winter sports holidays over Christmas and the New Year without insurance cover . Skiing is by its very nature accompanied with dangers ranging from bad weather restricting skiing time to broken bones as a result of a fall. This means that, by not taking out insurance holidaymakers are risking substantial costs to accompany their broken limbs.
Winter sport enthusiasts may take comfort in the European Health Insurance Card which entitles them to free or reduced price basic medical treatment, however it does not cover costs extras for example; mountain rescue, personal liability, loss of baggage or trip cancellations and it has been strongly advised that this is not used as a substitute for travel insurance .
There are a number of different insurance products available making it a challenge to decide how much cover is required. Moneysupermarket reportedly recommends £2 million for medical expenses, £1 million for personal liability, £3,000 cancelation cover and £1,500 for baggage protection. These are just guidelines, the Ski Club of Great Britain suggests that skiers should tailor their cover for what they intend to do on their trip and are clear on what their policy covers.
