Debt to pay for health care

Wed, 06 Feb 2008

Approximately two of every three American peoples claim that their family could be facing serious debt, should someone fall seriously ill. The survey was conducted by American company Creditcards.com, and gathered data from over 1000 adults to produce a report entitled ‘Health Care and Credit .’

The poll indicates that just 3 per cent of Americans think that their health insurance would cover a sudden large medical bill . Instead, most would turn to debt or use their savings accounts . Popular forms of debt included a loan or credit card .

America has a very different system of health care and health insurance to the UK, and one that has received considerable global attention in the private medical insurance news, due to the current electoral race. It is estimated that over 40 million Americans do not have a health insurance policy .
