Take your European health insurance card abroad

Wed, 20 Feb 2008

According to a recent study by the Automobile Association, holidaymakers should be taking their European Health Insurance Card abroad whenever they travel within Europe.

The AA issued a warning to all travellers that carrying an EHIC card is extremely important when travelling in Europe, and should a holidaymaker fall ill, it could save their life. Some consumers also take out travel insurance or international private health insurance policies .

The public relations manager for the AA, Ian Crowder, reportedly commented that: "This will ensure that if you or a member of your party are taken ill [or are] injured, et cetera, you will be adequately covered. [It will] enable you to get treatment in EU countries free or at low cost. [However], depending where you are may depend on the standard of service you get."

Other research conducted by website Gapyear.com indicates that a quarter of young travellers leave home uninsured .
