Health tourists need insurance cover

Wed, 26 Mar 2008

According to a recent warning from the Post Office, ‘health tourists’ – those people that travel abroad for the purpose of medical treatment – need to consider taking out specialist travel insurance .

Thousands of British people leave our shores every year to seek out cheaper, quicker medical treatment rather than relying on the National Health Service or taking out private medical insurance cover.

During 2007, the figure was put at around 70,000, many of whom went to have cosmetic surgery . The Post Office have conducted research that finds some 25,000 of these have not taken out insurance cover for their trip.

The head of Post Office Travel Services, Helen Warburton, said that purchasing additional specialist insurance cover was vital on any medical treatment trip. The alternative is to get UK health insurance .
