Health insurance company opens flagship London hospital

BUPA, the foremost UK private health insurance company, have acquired the Cromwell Hospital in London with the aim of making it a flagship of quality healthcare in the capital.

After selling a number of private hospitals last year, BUPA’s decision represents an interest in making healthcare better in the UK. Private hospitals in the UK are competing to treat large numbers of NHS patients .

BUPA sold a chain of hospitals to Spire Healthcare last year, a company that maintains it will focus on providing ‘premium private healthcare ’ in the capital.

The managing director of BUPA UK Health Insurance Fergus Kee reportedly commented: "BUPA has wanted to own a flagship hospital in London for about a decade. Having a flagship hospital in a capital city is not an entirely new model for BUPA. For many years we’ve had a flagship hospital in Madrid ."

BUPA maintain that their focus is on giving high quality healthcare, and will not influence their insurance industry. The health insurance company bought the hospital in March of this year and will invest some £30 million into the project.
