Risk from expired health insurance cover

Thu, 22 May 2008

According to a celebrity doctor, many Brits are travelling abroad thinking that they are covered by insurance, whilst actually their European Health Insurance Card has expired.

The European Health Insurance Card entitles Brits abroad to free health care throughout the EU. As many as three million of the cards are set to expire in the near future, putting millions at risk of not being covered.

Traditionally, Brits took an E111 form abroad, but this was replaced by the EHIC card . This medical insurance agreement with Europe provides people from the UK with cover in Europe .

Previous reports in the private medical insurance news indicate that travellers should also take a travel insurance policy, as well as carrying a valid EHIC.
