Avoiding health problems on the slopes this winter

Thu, 27 Nov 2008

According to recent statistics from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), ski slopes are one of the top five locations at which injuries occur. One in ten British skiers will suffer an injury this year, the report indicates. However, 31 per cent of Brits fail to take out insurance that covers their activities.

Although the European Health Insurance Card is a handy thing to carry, it is not the only cover one needs. The EHIC card is not comprehensive and will not cover you in every area of Europe.

For travel further afield, insurance cover is also a must. Jo Field of American Express Insurance reportedly commented: "Last season, the snow was poor in Europe and many people travelled to Canada and the US to get guaranteed conditions. But the costs of medical cover and repatriation in a medical emergency are much higher in exotic ski locations such as Japan and the US. You expose yourself to big costs without the right insurance . When you stack it up against the cost of an insurance policy, it doesn't bear thinking about."
