Doctor private medical insurance fraud claims

Wed, 22 Oct 2008

According to one leading UK private health insurance company, each year millions of pounds are being defrauded from the health insurance industries by dishonest hospitals and doctors .

Norwich Union Healthcare pointed the finger firmly at hospital consultant who they blamed for overcharging for private healthcare . Further cases of fraud could have involved unnecessary treatment or claiming for more complex procedures.

Already, cases brought against consultant gastroenterologists and gynaecologists have recovered thousands of pounds. Although a minor percentage of doctors are thought to be involved, the fraud increases premiums.

Norwich Union are now launching a counter-fraud program. The director of customer health care at the company, Simon Arnold, reportedly commented: "We want to try to stamp out the abuse. We are talking about £100 here and £50 there that builds up over time, not just the £10,000 fraud. It is time for us to make a concerted effort and now we are able to spot the patterns."
