A group of leading UK health insurance companies have combined to form the Health Insurance Counter Fraud Group. The aim of the partnership, between eleven leading health insurers, will be to lower levels of healthcare fraud.

The group is being backed by the Association of British Insurers, and are aiming to stamp out fraudulent private medical insurance claims. Experts estimate that false claims account for about 5 per cent of money paid out by the PMI industry.

The director of general insurance and health at the ABI, Nick Starling, reportedly commented: "Insurers are determined to crack down on fraud across the industry. This initiative will help to reduce fraud in the health insurance sector. It is honest customers who end up paying for the dishonesty of others, which is why we are taking the issue so seriously."

Speaking for the group, Dr. Peck was reported as saying: "Most of our customers and providers of healthcare services are honest but some are not. Our customers trust us to look after their money and as counter-fraud professionals that’s exactly what we do."
