Health insurance companies eye up NHS top ups

Wed, 15 Oct 2008

According to reports from the BBC, insurance companies in the UK could spot a potentially huge new market if and when top-up payments are approved on the National Health Service.

The Association of British Insurers were reported as pointing out that private medical insurance could have a major role to play to help patients to take advantage of new drugs and other treatments .

At this stage, the top up payments are under review and are not yet approved. If they are approved, it is thought that there will be a mad scramble amongst health insurance companies to fill the gap.

The head of health at the ABI, Nick Kirwan, was reported as commenting: "All of us potentially might get cancer and may want to have these drugs. Without insurance there is very few people going to be able to afford these drugs and insurance is something that would make them available to just about everybody."
