There has been a 10 per cent rise in sales of fresh beetroot in the UK as consumers appear to adopt healthy eating patterns. 18.3 million kilos of beetroot have been consumed over the past year, as British families spent a total of £42 million on the vegetable. The beetroot’s healthy properties and inexpensive price tag have made it a popular option among healthy minded consumers, fresh from learning of its potential use in protecting against high blood pressure, dementia and Alzheimers .
Indeed, beetroot is a rich source of carbohydrate, protein and contains a number of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. The healthier habits of some British consumers is likely to be influenced primarily by the media, whose frequent attention on the dangers of processed foods and the merits of various food types has penetrated the minds of at least some Brits it would seem. It is hoped that the constant reminders of the healthy properties of certain food types will improve health in the UK, reducing the strain on the NHS .
Health insurance providers and private health care firms may have also contributed to the trend, offering rewards and discounts for healthy living, both through gym discounts and even food rewards in some instances.
