New research from Cancer Research UK has revealed a significant improvement in some cancer survival rates over the past four decades, prompting health insurance comparison site Quoteboffin.co.uk to praise the work performed by health organisations. Since the 1970s, survival rates for some cancers including, bowel, breast and ovarian cancer have doubled. In the case of bowel and breast cancer, the number of people living at least ten years after diagnosis has risen from 23 per cent to more than 50 per cent and from 40 per cent to over 77 per cent respectively.
Quoteboffin.co.uk, who provide life insurance quotes as well as private medical insurance quotes, called on health organisations to continue the good work, amidst reports that the coalition government could be prepared to invest even more money in the prevention and treatments of cancers with less improved survival rates, such as brain, lung and pancreatic cancer .
Given the state of the UK economy, however, and the time required to conduct the necessary clinical trials, it could be some time before the NHS is able to offer the drugs, though the treatments are likely to be available earlier through private medical care .
