The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has revealed that the government it set to axe at least 10,000 NHS jobs, despite ministers promising to protect front line health services. The finding has strengthened concerns that the governments efforts to cut the deficit will jeopardise the quality of health care in Britain. Indeed, General Secretary and Chief Executive of the RCN claimed that an ‘insidious erosion of staffing’ is taking place in the National Health Service which cannot fail to harm the quality of hospital treatment. Many of the 10,000 job losses will be done quietly either through recruitment freezes or by not replacing retirees or redundancies .
With concerns over the quality of health care, experts have commented that the cuts could lead to an increase in the number of private medical insurance policies being taken out. There has been a concomitant increase in the number of private hospitals and private health insurance policyholders in Britain in recent years – a trend that could be set to continue as Brits looks to ensure they have access to the adequate health treatments .
