A recent article in the Telegraph claimed that a full-scale discussion of the National Health Service is urgently needed. Although many residents of the UK have health insurance, the vast majority rely on the NHS for their healthcare . Furthermore, even those with private medical insurance may have some elements of care in the NHS, so it is a topic of universal interest.
At this stage, none of the political parties are planning NHS cuts, but the service is thought to be in a difficult position. Recent Government reports into the state of the NHS has found that hygiene still leaves a lot to be desired. The Telegraph article called for a restructuring of the basic foundations of the NHS.
The article concluded that only radical measures can serve to preserve high quality public health care . The newspaper will now publish its own special reports, with the aim of starting a national discussion that is already overdue.
