A recent survey into the medical habits of 1,000 people in the UK found that two-thirds have cancelled or postponed essential treatment or consultations because of worries over healthcare costs. The study, by online health insurance provider Health365.com, revealed that consumers were concerned about the costs involved in accessing healthcare treatment, and that they were also confused about which treatments and procedures were charged under the NHS .
A third of all respondents also admitted they had delayed healthcare for at least six months because they thought they would not be able to afford it. It turns out that many are not aware that they could receive the treatment for free on the NHS.
In addition, a third of UK citizens weren’t aware that they had to pay for a dental check-up, and 43 per cent incorrectly believed that eye tests are free.
It was also shown that women were more likely to know what needed to be paid for, but that they were more likely to worry how expensive healthcare was and cancel treatments because of this.
Paul Shires, sales and marketing director at Health365.com, commented Many are delaying and even cancelling treatment because they are concerned about the cost. This is not only worrying from a financial perspective, but could arguably have a detrimental effect on the health of the nation.
